MICHAEL'S FORECAST: Latest on the winter weather on its way

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Get set for another blast of cold air with a round of winter weather... Temperatures drop quickly tonight as a shot of arctic air arrives; the cold air deepens late tonight/early Tuesday as a disturbance approaches from the west that will lead to a round of frozen precipitation. Light sleet and snow begin developing early Tuesday morning in Southwest Mississippi, increasing in coverage throughout the morning. The better snow accumulation totals will be in South Mississippi, south of I-20 where 1 to 3 inches are likely near the U.S. 84 corridor. North of I-20, amounts will run less, with a dusting to 1 inch, on average. But keep in mind, higher amounts are certainly possible in isolated spots.

In addition to snow and sleet, the extended period of bitter cold is the big story. Temperatures hold at and below freezing tomorrow, and where snow is on the ground will plummet into the low teens and even a few single digits by sunrise Wednesday. We go above freezing for a while Wednesday afternoon, then right back into the teens Thursday morning.

Finally, a big time warming trend kicks in Thursday afternoon; and believe it or not, we soar into upper 60s and low 70s by Friday and Saturday!
