Winter storm preps: Jackson area

PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

As frigid weather is forecast for parts of the Magnolia State, the state and homeowners are taking precautions.

"I'm not gonna do the work, I have somebody else that's gonna do this for me." said Marietta Messick as she left  Sutherlands with an armful of pipe insulation that she hopes to get installed before the big freeze settles over the metro.

The Edwards resident rushed to make the purchase.

"It wasn't cold enough and we didn't think it was gonna get cold enough for our pipes to freeze," said Messick.  "So now we're having to buy these to cover our pipes so our pipes don't freeze tonight."

One day before the cold descends, building supply retailers are running out of heating units. Sutherlands Manager Chuck Ellis says the gas and electric heating systems are going fast.

The store got 70 units a few weeks ago after selling out during that big temperature drop, but the electric heaters, which move easily from room to room, are top sellers.

"We got another shipment in after the last cold snap so we're getting down on them," said Ellis. "Pipe insulation sells super well this time of year, insulating the exposed pipes up in your attic, just to keep them from freezing. If you get a hard freeze on them then you'll have pipes bursting."

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is gearing up for the hard freeze and winter storm. Governor Phil Bryant issued an emergency declaration for counties mainly south of I-20.

"Most of what appears to be significant snow and some sleet and ice would accumulate or be affective in 36 counties that have been identified," said the governor.

MEMA officials are preparing for a major winter event and locating resources in areas of need before any precipitation accumulates.
