(WMC-TV) - The Tennessee Department of Transportation will take extreme precautions after the gridlock in Atlanta.

TDOT officials made the decision Thursday morning to jump ahead of potentially bad weather by placing brine on all state routes, interstates, bridges, and roadways across West Tennessee.

"So doing a little prework ahead of an event always gives us an advantage in fighting this as it falls or whatever we have to do with it, whether it's feet of snow, freezing rain, or anything like that," said TDOT District Manger Michael Welch.

Memphis fireman Dan Harris and his family left their family vacation in Orlando early so they could drive home safely for work by Friday. He drove 15 to 20 miles per hour through Birmingham.

"Thousands of cars overturned down in ditches wrecked together. It didn't matter the type of vehicle: four-wheel drive, two-wheel drive, big rigs, news trucks, garbage trucks, everything," said Harris.

TDOT officials say millions of pounds of salt stay stored all over West Tennessee in bins.

"Looking at Atlanta, I don't know how prepared they were. We want to be proactive as we can we want to be ready for when it comes," said Welch.

Welch says the ground is frozen solid from the freezing temperatures lately and that the asphalt is just as cold making it easier for freezing rain to stick.
