(WMC-TV) - A Memphis city councilwoman had an apparent breakdown on her radio show Monday after claiming her husband wants to kill her.

"Everybody wants to know, 'Well, why do you drink? Why do you do this?' You know, I can't say it's because of him, but it's because of him I have done these things," said Janice Fullilove on her WDIA talk show. "I'm going to protect my life. I don't care this man here threatened to kill me, and I want the police director and everybody in the city to know."

Sympathetic listeners called in as Fullilove apologized to her co-host.

"I can't let him kill me, and he's threatened to kill me," she said. "He says he hates me."

A few seconds after Fullilove apologized she left her own show. She said she did not care if she is fired from the radio show.

Fullilove and her husband, Vernon Chalmers, had well-publicized skirmishes. Police were called to the couple's home about a disturbance in 2012 where Fullilove was accused of being drunk and throwing dishes around her house, hitting Chalmers. The couple was arrested.

A judge ruled Fullilove not guilty of domestic violence, but the two were ordered to stay apart.

Since the case closed, Fullilove and Chalmers were free to live together again.

Chalmers did not return Action News 5's calls for comment.

A spokesperson for WDIA said Fullilove's employment status is unchanged. They had no warning Fullilove was going to make the comments but understand she is going through an emotional time.
