MEMA: Snow possible Thursday along and south of I-20

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is asking citizens to be aware of the forecast of winter weather in central and parts of south Mississippi on Thursday morning into Thursday afternoon.

The National Weather Service says that areas along and south of I-20, down to the U.S. Highway 98 corridor could see light snowfall with up to an inch of accumulation. Areas north of I-20 could see flurries and a light dusting of snow. This could create hazardous driving conditions in some areas, especially on bridges and overpasses.

Temperatures in the central part of the state should hover around the low to mid 30s throughout the day. Temperatures further south will remain in the low to mid 40s, and areas could see some wintry mix and rainfall.

MEMA and county emergency managers will monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary.

What does Dave Roberts say about this:

Snow possibilities for Thursday?  This is just one of our forecast models showing the potential for a mixture of some snow flurries and rain sprinkles during the middle of the day.  With temperatures near freezing, it wouldn't take much to cause problems.  None of the forecast models show large accumulations or definitive snow, but we believe a low pressure system will quickly move across Mississippi and stir up enough instability to create some light snow and sprinkles.  A dusting certainly looks possible, but as with most systems of this time in the deep south, a degree or two difference in temperature can make a world of difference in our weather.  Warmer weather returns by this weekend with near seasonable temperatures.
