(WMC-TV) - Before officials approved an ordinance, Shelby County did not require pet owners to do the basics like feed and water their pets.

"You have to feed your pet once a day, water it once a day, provide rudimentary shelter, don't use a choke collar. If it is really sick or diseased in its fur you have to take it to the vet," said commissioner Steve Mulroy, who worked on the ordinance for two years.

If owners do not comply then they will see a fine. It will cost $50 for each violation; no water, for instance, for three days adds up to a $150 fine.

He hopes the ordinance will cut down on abuse.
