Groundbreaking for new Farish St. community

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Downtown Jackson's Mount Helm Baptist Church was packed with folks singing and praying and it wasn't even Sunday. They were there for a very special groundbreaking ceremony.

The songs and prayers were about giving thanks for the changes that are about to happen to this low-income and often neglected neighborhood. Certain eyesores in the historic Farish Street district will give way to beautiful town homes like the ones in an illustration on display.

"We're trying to build communities that will allow the families to grow and enjoy quality of life to raise their children and make a difference," said a member of the development team.

The Church Street area will soon have 88 town homes and a 4-thousand square foot community center, all affordable to the lower end, middle class, working families who don't have quite enough income to afford homes of this size and quality," said developer Clarence Chapman. "Yet they deserve them and this program makes that available to them."

This new tax credit development will be called Helm Place, incorporating the name of the oldest historically black church in Jackson.

"We expect this to be a substantial enough undertaking that it can help bring the Farish street historic district back," Chapman added. "Aid the Farish street entertainment district by putting a big enough piece of money and housing on the ground to encourage other to come in the area."

Construction of the new Farish Street community called Helm Place, is expected to begin in November.
