Neighbors furious, concerned over spray paint vandalism

SHELBY COUNTY, TN -
(WMC-TV) – People living on Creek Front Drive in Cordova are trying to clean up after vandals took to their garages, driveways, and backyards.

The vandals spray painted gang signs and messages all along the street.

Every day Cindy Garrison comes to check on her 94-year-old aunt at her Cordova home.

"Right now she's mad," said Garrison after learning that someone vandalized her aunt's home. "The neighbor said, 'Oh my goodness, you won't believe what we found.'"

Gang signs were painted in bright red on the brick right next to her aunt's bedroom.

"She's alive and kicking and ready to do something about it, because she just doesn't want to leave her neighborhood," said Garrison.

Shaken? Yes. Worried about her safety? Maybe. But the 94-year-old victim was not the only one. Just down the alley, spray painted messages line fences, garage doors, and brick.

The messages appear to be gang related, which is scary for some neighbors.

But while Action News 5 was shooting video, police arrived to take a report.

Garrison says they told her aunt not to be worried because this was likely a prank, and likely not gang related at all.

Either way, it has left behind a mess that will not wash away easily.

"It's just disheartening for an elderly person to be alone and need security. It doesn't feel safe," said Garrison.

Police have not filed any charges at this time, as they have no suspects.

Action News 5 checked, and although several hardware stores ask to see ID when purchasing paint, not all of them do.
