Belzoni Alderman Indicted on forgery charge

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi State Auditor's Office has arrested Belzoni Alderman Charles Thurman at the Humphreys County Sheriff's Office.

Thurman has been indicted on one count of uttering forgery by a Humphreys County Grand Jury.

He is accused of hiring an unlicensed contractor, George Schroeder, to perform work at City Hall.

Following completion of the work, a $4,500.00 check was issued for payment.

Authorities say Thurman intercepted the check written to Schroeder, forged his signature, and tried to cash the check.

"I thank our Special Agents for their work on this case," Auditor Pickering said. "This is another example of government officials misusing their office for their own benefit."

Following the arrest, Thurman was released on a $1,000.00 bond.
