Alleged sexual molester back in jail

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A wanted fugitive is back behind bars in Hancock County, this, after barricading himself in a southwest Jackson neighborhood Thursday.

Forty-three year old Melvin Mason sits in jail without a bond but he is not facing any additional charges for the standoff he had with police for hours Thursday in Jackson.

Hancock County Chief Investigator Glen Grannan says,

"Dangerous. Dangerous to children," said Hancock County Chief Investigator Glen Brannan. "Other things that we discovered about him made him the kind of character that needs to be in jail."

One character trait that gave police pause for concern, Melvin Mason was a member of the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang. And according to the Sea Coast Echo newspaper out of Bay St. Louis, He is considered a heinous sexual offender.

The 43 year old alleged sexual molester from the coast ended up in southwest Jackson Thursday after he escaped from court Monday in Hancock County. He was facing a judge for his 2012 charges, four counts of touching a child for lustful purposes and three counts of sexual battery, according to Jackson Police.

However, the Sea Coast Echo is reporting Mason is accused of ten counts of touching a child for lustful purposes and three counts of sexual battery. When a Gulf Coast judge asked him to take a drug test, Mason escaped.

This is not the first time Mason has had a run in with the law.

The coast newspaper is reporting back in 2012 when Mason was arrested for the child sex crimes, he was actually on probation from the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Later, he was released from MDOC and posted bond on the Hancock County sex charges.

"He had actually tried to avoid prosecution in the past at least a couple of times," said Grannan.

Sea Coast Echo reports, before the 2012 arrest Mason left Hancock County and was captured by U.S. Marshals hiding in a Gulfport apartment complex closet.

JPD did tell us there was a woman inside the barricaded home with Mason, but did not say it was a hostage situation. Other sources tell us, the woman inside the home was Mason's girlfriend.
