Area students honored for achievements at state capitol

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson area students were honored at the capitol Sunday for their academic achievements.

The National Council of Negro Women Metro Jackson section wrapped up their two day summit with an awards program.

Forty-seven students were selected by their counselors for their scholastic achievements.

The program reaches out to children from sixth through 12th grade.

Saturday's summit included workshops on acquiring scholarships, budgeting and finance, social media and bullying.

Parents also took part in the two day event.

"This is one of the legacies that were left to us by our founders and we're carrying that legacy on to try to help support the women and children as they work in their communities," said Mattie Stevens, National Council of Negro Women President.

The Alice Harden Youth Summit is held annually during Black History Month.
