CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Clinton Park students and faculty are rallying behind one of their own.

Carter Brown, a kindergartner, is fighting cancer, and his school family wants to help out however they can.

They are selling "Hearts for Carter" paper hearts.

A large heart costs $10, a medium heart is $5, and a small heart is $1.

The school will decorate the hearts and place them on the wall in the main entrance for Carter to see. The funds will be donated directly to the Brown family.

The fundraiser continues through Friday, Feb. 21.

"I think it is important to teach children at an early age about helping people. What a great way to use Clinton Park's motto: ‘ARROWS - We are Arrows, respectful, responsible, obedient winners who will succeed!' We are a school with 800-plus children and Carter is part of our Clinton Park family," said Annie Villejoin, PTO President.

Within the first day of the fundraiser, donations equaled nearly $400.

Carter's teacher, Debbie Sigler, works with Carter twice a week after school.

"He's eager to learn," said Sigler. "He will be surprised to see the hearts on the wall the next time he comes to school."

Michelle Brown, Carter's mom, expressed her gratitude for Clinton Park and the community of Clinton for this fundraiser.

"We especially want to thank Mrs. Sigler for working with Carter," she said.

"They say it takes a village to raise a child but in this instance, it is Clinton Park families doing their part to rally behind Carter and we invite our fine city to join us," said Villejoin.

Donations to Hearts for Carter can be dropped off at the Clinton Park Elementary School main office.
