HOLLISTER, CA (KSBW/NBC) - As California deals with one of its worst droughts in history, local water districts are doing what they can to conserve what little water they have, even if it means imposing stiff fees for those who use too much water.

That's what the San Benito County Water District did Tuesday when the water board unanimously approved a resolution declaring a water shortage emergency.

"This is the worst situation that we've seen in San Benito County in the last 150 years," said water district manager Jeff Cattaneo.

The emergency declaration asks for voluntary water conservation and imposes stiff fees for consumers who use more water than they're allocated.

The resolution goes into effect immediately, but does not apply to residential water users.
