Congressman Bennie Thompson is encouraging all uninsured Mississippians to sign-up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.
Thompson made a trip to Tougaloo College Thursday morning where he kicked off his state tour to get people enrolled in the health insurance marketplace.
Several representatives from healthcare organizations across the state were on hand to answer questions and sign visitors up for the new insurance program.
Sign-up for insurance through the Affordable Care Act has been slow in Mississippi, but Congressman Thompson hopes his tour will change that.
"This state did not support the President. This is a presidential initiative that I support because it's the right thing to do and hopefully over time just like social security, Medicare and Medicaid were not popular programs in the state. Over time it became popular and I look forward to that being the case with the Affordable Care Act."
The open enrollment deadline to sign up for insurance through the healthcare exchange is March 31st.
