RIO RANCHO, N.M., Feb. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Overeaters Anonymous is saddened to announce the recent passing of beloved founder, Rozanne S., at the age of 84. Rozanne was a visionary whose compassion for and understanding of the emotional and physical challenges faced by compulsive eaters have touched people around the world for 54 years.

Rozanne's journey to bring help and hope to those struggling with compulsive overeating began in Los Angeles, California, at a Gamblers Anonymous meeting in 1958. She attended with a friend who was in need, but ended up finding salvation herself at the twelve-step meeting. She realized she wasn't "wicked or sinful" but that she had a disease, and it had a name: compulsive overeating. Unfortunately, no groups existed for compulsive overeaters at that time. In desperation she returned to the Gamblers Anonymous meeting where the leader encouraged her to start her own twelve-step program for those dealing with the disease. That began her 54 year history with Overeaters Anonymous. She leaves an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire and heal those who still suffer.

The Los Angeles Intergroup of OA (a partnership of groups located within the Los Angeles area) has organized a memorial service. The service will be held Sunday, March 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at the Veteran's Park Teen Center, 4153 Overland Avenue, Culver City, CA. Members who knew Rozanne will share stories of the early days of OA. All members are encouraged to attend and share their personal stories as well. If members are unable to attend, but would like to honor Rozanne's passing, the family has asked that donations be made to Overeaters Anonymous in her memory. Donations, accepted from OA members only, can be made via the web at (please select Rozanne S. Memorial in the drop down menu.) Donations can also be made by contacting the OA World Service Office at 505-891-2664, or by mail at P.O. Box 44020, Rio Rancho, NM 87174.
