Few leads in Scott County murder

SCOTT COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It's a family's worst nightmare: 30-year-old Anthony Scott Gibbs of the Pulaski area was found dead by a neighbor Friday afternoon in Scott County.

"It appears right now that he definitely died of a gunshot," said Sheriff Mike Lee. "We're still waiting on an initial autopsy report."

Lee said bruising and abrasions on the body indicate it could have been dragged, meaning more than one person could be responsible. Some of those injuries could have come from exposure to the elements, though.

Lee said the body had been there for at least 24 hours.

"Especially in the area where this young man, where his body was found, we normally don't see those," Lee said. "And it is a shock."

Gibbs' grandmother said her grandson was a wonderful person, but fears that drug involvement might have been a factor in his death.

"With this case, right now, the motive is the big question we've got with this, 100 percent," Lee said.

So far, Lee said there are no leads in the case, but it's generating a lot of interest.

"We are continuing to get calls, and we want those calls to continue to come in and not stop," Lee said. "Anything that someone may have heard, anything that someone may know, we definitely want them to come forward and help with this."

Family members say Gibbs' funeral is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Forest.
