Special Election for Jackson Mayor April 8

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Jackson City Council has voted unanimously to set a special election for Mayor on April 8. The decision was made in a special council meeting Monday afternoon.

The deadline for voter registration is this Saturday March 8th, and for those interested in running for Mayor, the deadline to submit qualifying papers is March 19th.

"We've been advised by city legal as well as Debra Hoseman that just to be on the safe side that we had best to do it by 10 business days to set the election and so that makes sense to do it today," said Melvin Priester Jr., Acting President for Jackson's City Council.

There will be no primary and if no candidate gets a majority, the top two will have a run-off  April 22.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba died last week from natural causes. His funeral service will be held Saturday.

Tuesday morning, council member DeKeither Stamps will hold a press conference that will include a special prayer for the direction of the city since Mayor Lumumba's death. Prospective candidates are also invited to ask any questions they may have before the special election.
