CARBON HILL, AL (WBRC) -

AT&T has selected Carbon Hill for a national pilot program that one day will provide customer access to the latest technology.

The pilot program will serve as the model for providing customers with access to what the company is calling an ultra-fast internet based network.

Carbon Hill is only one of two cities in the U.S. AT&T is using to test out an "Internet-based network that will essentially do away with old-fashioned telephone service," the company said in a release.

The company will use information gathered from this trial to develop new products and processes that can be used across the country.

"We believe all consumers and businesses deserve the opportunity to be connected by the best network technology available. This trial is going to help the entire country learn how to make that happen while assuring that consumers stay safe and connected. We look forward to strengthening America's communications future with our customers in Carbon Hill, and to preserving the values of universal service, competition, public safety, reliability and consumer protection," Fred McCallum, president of AT&T Alabama, said in a statement.

The Federal Communications Commission will oversee the program.

They are realistic about the fact that with a new program or technology there may be problems. To learn more, Carbon Hill residents and businesses can attend a series of meetings starting this week. You can also visit http://ip4carbonhill.att.com.
