Refreezing, black ice make for hazardous road conditions
CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -
VDOT continued to tackle primary roads and interstates Monday night after the snow storm ended, as black ice was a major concern. However, secondary roads were already covered with thick sheets of ice making some nearly impassable.
"They're really slick," said one driver. "I would take my time and be patient."
VDOT crews worked 12-hour shifts putting down sand to add traction but salt application stopped. That's because salt is rendered ineffective when temperatures drop below 20-degrees. And temperatures did plummet.
"It's cold!" Said another driver to NBC12 in a Chesterfield parking lot. "The primary roads aren't bad but this parking lot as you can see pretty much ice."
VDOT strongly encourages folks to delay travel overnight as refreezing will cause hazardous conditions into Tuesday morning.
If you must travel, pay particular attention to ramps, bridges, overpasses and other spots prone to freezing.
"I'm going to have to go to work," said Chesterfield resident Peppy Jones. "But it's going to be in the 40's over the next couple of days so all this will go away. That's the nice thing about snow in March in Virginia. It's not going to last long."
