A community prays for missing 2 year old's safe return

CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A community came together in prayer for the safe return of a missing Madison county toddler. Family, friends and complete strangers gathered in Canton at a vigil for two year old Myra Lewis.

Songs and prayers echoed through the night for Myra's safe return Tuesday at Canton City Hall. It was the third day of her disappearance. Some family members were in attendance but did not comment.

Gloria Nason is close friends with the family and organized the vigil.

"I feel in my heart that we need to come together as a community and try to pray this child home," said Nason. "It's only by God's grace we're here and whoever has the child please bring her back."

She hopes the child will be dropped off at a designated safe place in any nearby city or town.

Family friend Linda Nason said they have faith that Myra is still alive.

"Right now we're just leaving it in the hands of God," said Linda. "We just leave it in his hands. We're praying. We don't believe that we lost her. We know that she's in God's hand right now and she's gonna come back home."

More than 60 people braved mid 30 degree temperatures to express their support.

"I ask you all to certainly pray for her family," said Canton Mayor Arnel Boldon. "Many of you all are mothers and fathers in this audience. I certainly ask that you keep her family in your deepest prayer for her safe return."

"I don't even know them. I just wanted to be here," said Canton resident Pearl Nichols. "I just wanted to be here because like I said if we pray together things will get better."

"Mr. Lewis comes in our store all the time and buys pizzas, said Domino's employee Richard Cox. "My G.M. asked me to come to this vigil tonight and get some pictures so we're gonna put them on our pizza boxes. We deliver all up into Harvey Crossing, Gluckstadt all around Canton."

The FBI has joined in the search for little Myra.

Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker said the initial report of an abduction is not necessarily true, and they are continuing to investigate all possibilities for the cause of her disappearance.
