Highcroft Elementary is designed for 830 students, but it currently has at least 100 over capacity.
"The classrooms are crowded. The hallways are crowded. The lunch room is crowded," Lominack said.
The classrooms could soon be even more crowded.
Nine modular classrooms sit in the back of the school right now. The plan is to add several more. Instead, parents want the school board to consider something called "spot noding," basically assigning families moving into new neighborhoods to an alternative, less crowded school.
"Don't unfairly overburden one school with modular units when there are other options out there," Lominack said.
School board district representative Susan Evans listened to parents on Tuesday night and directed school staff to look into it. Via email on Wednesday, she told WNCN those modular classrooms were an unfortunate reality "so long as our population growth exceeds the school system's resources to build new schools."
Lominack says it does not have to be that way.
"There are hard decisions that the board can make, but this is the easy way out," he said referring to the plan to add more modular classrooms.
Evans says school staff should come back to the board with a recommendation on the feasibility of spot noding in a few weeks.
