JPD prepares for Mayor Lumumba's funeral

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Jackson Police Department is preparing for late Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba's Celebration of Life Service.

"The mayor was very much loved," said Assistant Chief Lee Vance. "He was almost like a rock star in certain ways."

Many people are remembering late Mayor Chokwe Lumumba as a beloved father, a human rights activist and a great leader of the city of Jackson.

His vision, "One City, One Aim, One Destiny," will be remembered by many on Friday as his body lies in repose at Jackson City Hall.

Saturday, the late mayor will be laid to rest. Vance says the department has been working closely with the Lumumba family for the past five days on an elaborate plan to escort Mayor Lumumba to his resting.

"Once the funeral is over there is going to be a processional that leads through Martin Luther King Blvd. to Medgar Evers Blvd. on to Northside Drive to the cemetery," said Vance. "One of the things we would like to see the public do is come out along that route. This gives everybody an opportunity to say goodbye to Mayor Lumumba."

Vance says there will be a huge police presence during this time and the processional will move slowly.

"We want to ask the indulgence of the public as well," added Vance. "Because we are going to have to block some streets and intersections."

So, the department is asking for not only your participation, but patience during this time of grief.

"A lot of us, including myself knew the mayor very personally," said Vance. "He is going to be very much missed. I do know he had a great relationship with a lot of people on this police department and his death is being felt rather deeply."
