The city prepares to lay Mayor Lumumba to rest

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The doors of City Hall are open on Friday for you to pay tribute to the late Mayor Chokwe Lumumba.

WLBT's Jewell Hillery reported live on Friday morning from City Hall.

Mayor Lumumba's body will rest in repose inside of City Hall from 11 am until 3 pm. A remembrance hour is scheduled from 4 to 5 Friday evening, followed by another viewing from 5 to 7 pm.

The Mayor's Celebration of Life ceremony is on Saturday at 11 am at the Jackson Convention Complex.

Afterwards, the community is encouraged to line up along the procession route to the Autumn Woods Memorial Gardens. The procession will travel from Downtown Jackson, to Martin Luther King Blvd, onto Medgar Evers Blvd and then onto Northside Drive.

"We are here to allow you to mourn and make peace with our late mayor and this is just a time for the public to come and send their regards to the family and also to just bring more solidarity and unity back to our community," Councilman De'Keither Stamps told us.

If you are planning to make the trip to City Hall today expect to walk more than usual from your vehicle.

Also, for security reasons you cannot bring in purses, backpacks or cameras.
