Mayor's body lies in repose

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A somber day for the City of Jackson as the late Mayor Chokwe Lumumba's body lies in repose at Jackson City Hall.

The late Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba's casket was brought inside Jackson City Hall just before 10 Friday morning. City employees as well as Jackson residents like Gwendolyn Chapman lined the front sidewalk. Some showing no emotion, while others wept.

"He loved the city and he loved people so dearly," said Chapman. "It was not about the nationality. That's the kind of spirit he had. A helping a servant spirit. He wasn't boastful, he was humble."

Cameras were not allowed inside city hall, but members of the city sent us pictures.

Jackson city employees were the first to go in and pay their respects. City employee Jewell Davis, who has worked for the late mayor since his term began, says this is a time of grieving and sadness for everyone who knew him.

"He was sincerely a humble person and I can't emphasize that enough," said Davis. "He was more than the politician. He really came in to that position to make a big change in the city of Jackson."

Hundreds of people flooded the inside of city hall to pay their respects to the influential man who led the city. He has left a mark in hundreds of hearts and so many people remember him as a pacesetter for human rights and a notable mentor who instilled fighting for equality in the minds of adolescents.

"We have to ensure that we carry on his vision, 'from one city, with one aim, to fulfil one destiny,'" said Davis.

"His legacy will continue, I know that," added Chapman.
