Court of Appeals schedule arguments in cold case

Lawyers for a man convicted in the 1995 killing of a woman in Tunica County will argue his innocence on March 18 before the Mississippi Supreme Court.

The state Court of Appeals last year upheld the murder conviction of Joe Cotton. He was sentenced to life in prison in 2012 in the death of Fannie Lee Burks.

Cotton appealed to the Supreme Court.

The case remained unsolved until 2008, when the county Sheriff's Office tested biological evidence found under Burks's fingernails. Authorities say the resulting DNA matched Cotton. But Cotton's lawyers say that evidence isn't enough to prove more than a casual encounter between the two.

The case is among dozens the Supreme Court will consider during its March-April term.
