86-year-old Hinds Co. man drowns in swimming pool

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Hinds County Coroner has confirmed that a Hinds County man has drowned, Thursday morning, in his swimming pool.

It reportedly happened at his family's Byram home, on Parks Place Road, around 6:45 in the morning.

He has been identified as 86-year-old David Sessums.

The family tells us that at around 6 am Thursday morning he went outside because he thought he heard raccoons getting in the cat food. Later, at around 6:45, family members found him in the swimming pool dead.

We are told that Sessums began having heart issues in February. It is not known at this time if heart problems had anything to do with his falling in the pool.

Right now the drowning is being ruled an accident.

Sessums leaves behind a wife, daughter, 3 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

Sessums grew up in Morton. He was a principal for several schools within the Jackson Public School District. He retired from JPS in 1990 after 41 years.

Tentative funeral arrangements: Visitation Sunday from 2-5pm at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram. Funeral Monday 11a.m.
