A Henrico woman is out thousands of dollars after police say she fell victim to a construction fraud.
Lloyd Currie was paid to renovate her home, but police say he faces multiple charges, including never finishing the job and never having a contractor's license.
The homeowner, Cynthia Taylor, was promised this job would only take a few weeks, but it's been six months.
"The work here is not professional at all," she said. "It's been one big mess."
A big mess that's turned into an even bigger headache; only half of the floor is done, there is no bathroom and nobody can live in her home.
"All of this work is incomplete," she said.
Taylor says she put her trust in Currie to renovate the downstairs. Now Currie is in jail, accused of never finishing the job and taking her money.
"It has been devastating, but as a Christian, I try to stay on the positive side," she said.
The job started in September. Taylor says she met Currie at a hardware store while buying supplies. She gave him access to the house.
"He just presented such a beautiful picture to me and showed me a portfolio that I felt like, this is my guy," she said. "I really need to use him."
But not only was the work never finished, police say Currie took off with some of the family's jewelry. He is charged with at least two felonies.
"The bad contractors are usually the people that show up and they're anxious, they're anxious to get money," says Brian Gray, a licensed contractor who owns Buckeye Builders Construction.
Gray says you need a license with the state to work. He also offers these tips:
• Check references
• Make sure a contractor has insurance
• Never pay for labor until the job is done
"If somebody can start your job tomorrow, they're probably not the best contractor because they don't have any work lined up," says Gray.
For Taylor, she now has somebody else cleaning up the mess.
Currie's next court date is set for April. Police say they do not know of any other alleged victims at this time.
