JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson Police confirm a homicide investigation is underway after the discovery of a shooting victim inside his apartment.

Authorities arrived at the Millsaps Plaza Apartments on Millsaps Avenue at approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Once inside, they discovered the body of 61-year-old Jerry Neal.

His daughter Luscious Neal said family members last spoke to him Monday evening. Because of that, authorities haven't been able to narrow down exactly when the shooting took place. Autopsy results could shed some light on that.

JPD Officer Colendula Green said Jerry Neal was found with a gunshot wound to the upper chest. Luscious Neal said she believed someone tried to rob her father and killed him in the process, but had no idea who could be involved.

"He bothered no one. Everybody knew him," she said. "He knew everybody, but he didn't bother anyone. He's a fun person. He got along with everybody, so this is just kinda weird, because this is not something you're gonna expect from him."

The daughter said her father was found with his pockets inside out, indicating someone had taken whatever money he had on him.

On Friday, Millsaps College released this statement: Millsaps College was saddened by news reports of gun violence in the Midtown area yesterday.  This incident occurred off campus, and no Millsaps community members were involved.

The College is committed to the safety of the Millsaps community and our neighbors in Midtown, and to strengthening partnerships with community leaders, business owners, and local authorities.  Through these initiatives, we are confident that our campus will continue to be a safe place for Millsaps students, faculty, and staff.
