Jackson police investigated a fatal shooting Monday afternoon at the Melrose Place Apartments on West Highland Drive. It is the location of the old Lodge Apartments.
JPD Officer Colendula Green identified the victim as Demario Johnson.
"You heard the two shots. It's just sad," said a Melrose Place resident who did not want to give her name.
She said that gunfire was heard throughout the complex before police arrived to find 20 year old Demario Johnson dead at the rear of the complex. He was in the driver's seat of a Chevrolet Cavalier that crashed into a wooded property barrier.
"I know a car, the car that they say it happened in, has been riding through here a couple of days ago," said the unidentified resident. "But I didn't see anything. I was in my house, but I know you could hear the gunshot."
Officers responded to a shots fired call around four p.m. Monday. Investigators placed three markers on shell casing discovered several yards from where the car stopped.
"He was shot in the back of his head," said Officer Green.
According to Green, Johnson was shot once and pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have not said if he was a resident of the apartment complex.
"He was found shot inside his vehicle. So I don't know if he rushed to his vehicle and tried to get away or if somebody just walked up on him and shot him," said Green. "We're just trying to determine that motive."
Police are hoping witnesses will come forward to provide some specifics about suspects or a motive. Green said they have responded to several incidents at the complex so far this year.
"We have security, but it's like we don't have security," added a frustrated Melrose Place resident. "It's sad. It's not like the first time you hear gunshots out here."
