Poultry workers want better, safer working conditions

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Poultry workers are protesting conditions inside processing plants in Mississippi. They are calling for better long term health and safety issues.

Advocates were joined at the Capitol Wednesday by lawmakers protesting working conditions in plants. They oppose a USDA proposal to increase the number of processed chickens on-line.

A Mississippi Senate bill requiring employers to provide benefits, safety practices and training died in committee this year.

"The Mississippi legislature is keeping an eye on this and we will continue to come up with legislation that shows and points to the serious conditions that we have not dealt with until now," said Senator Kenneth Jones.

The mother of a worker killed in 2013 after falling into a meat grinder, called for more protections at work places.

The U.S. Poultry and Chicken Council refutes claims on worker safety.
