JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

On Friday morning, we got reports that an officer had been assaulted and received a minor head injury at the Waffle House on I-55 N.

We were also told that a suspect was in custody.

Eyewitnesses to the fight between the suspect, Calvin Wright, and the JPD officer say it was the officer who was the aggressor. They tell us the officer punched Calvin Wright in the chest for no reason which then led to a tussle between the two.

Witnesses also say Calvin was kicked and punched and maced while in handcuffs after backup arrived.

Business owners in the area say Calvin is homeless and schizophrenic. We are told that he lives in a makeshift tent behind a pawn shop next to the Waffle House.

JPD Assistant Chief Lee Vance says the attack on the officer was unprovoked.

Officials say the officer was hit in the head with a coffee pot. The suspect was then subdued and arrested.

The officer is currently in the hospital but is expected to be fine.
