JULIA'S FORECAST: Freeze Warning in Effect Tonight

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Happy Tuesday!

A freeze warning is in effect tonight, starting at 10pm.

In the meantime, we're sunny, chilly, and windy today. High temp in the upper 50s to near 60, but NNW winds 10-20mph make it feel more like low/mid 50s. At least we have the sunshine though!

Tonight the winds ease and the skies remain clear, creating perfect conditions for cooling temps. We're likely going to come close to or land just below freezing for an hour or two in the main Jackson Metro. Greatest impacts in the majority of our viewing area will be some damage to unprotected sensitive plants. As for areas SW of town, I'm not terribly concerned. Natchez/McComb/Brookhaven will likely dip to the mid 30s, but I don't think there's any real damage to be expected. It's areas NE of town (Columbus, Meridian, etc) that have a greater threat for temps dipping into the mid/upper 20s.

In terms of major crops, I checked in with a specialist at Mississippi State who said that wheat is at greatest risk, since it can be damaged at temps <=25. That's under the current forecast low, but it could be close. Any budding/flowering fruits are also at risk.

Cool again tomorrow in the low 60s! Warmer on Thursday (low 70s) with a few rain showers... rain and storms possible Friday, near 80 degrees. We're looking warm for the weekend too!
