Michelle Truong, of Leesburg, and Brooks Anne Mitchell, of Albany, received two national awards each and scholarships totaling more than $13,000.
Truong has been named the 2014 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Silver Scholar, while Mitchell was named the 2014 New Century Scholar for Georgia. Both students were named the 2014 Guistwhite Scholars.
Mitchell, who was named the 2014 New Century Scholar for Georgia, is one of only 51 students from the United States, Canada and American Samoa to receive this honor and will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship. More than 1,700 students were nominated from more than 900 community colleges for recognition.
Truong is one of 50 students nationally to receive the Coca-Cola Silver Scholar honor, a $1,250 scholarship.
Recipients for both awards were chosen based on their grades, leadership, activities and most importantly, how students extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom. In addition, both Mitchell and Truong were two of only 20 national Guistwhite Scholar recipients for 2014. Each Guistwhite Scholar will receive a $5,000 scholarship for baccalaureate studies and a commemorative medallion.
Guistwhite Scholars are chosen based on academic achievement, leadership accomplishment, and engagement in Phi Theta Kappa programs. The Guistwhite scholarship is the second highest scholarship offered by Phi Theta Kappa.
Michelle Truong, of Leesburg, is a double major in Pre-Engineering and Biomedical Technology. Currently, Truong is vice president of Scholarship for Phi Theta Kappa, first vice president for MESA and graduate of the Honors Program. She plans to earn her doctorate in Bioengineering enabling her to work on stem cell research and genetically modified organisms; her interests extend to the study of artificial organs and prosthetics.
Brooks Mitchell, of Albany, is a double major in Biological Science and Spanish. She is currently president of the Honors Club, vice president of fellowship for Phi Theta Kappa, vice president of MESA, and is involved in Baptist Collegiate Ministries (BCM), Servant Leadership and the theatre program at Darton.
