Columbia bars shut down, cited for fire code violations

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Two Columbia clubs were shut down Saturday night for fire code violations.

Group Therapy on Greene Street was cited for overcrowding and Twist, which was formally known as The Library, on Harden Street was cited for a locked and obstructed exit.

"This is something that we do often," said Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins. "This is just a normal thing for us.  Two bars we did close down because when you have a locked or a blocked exit, that's pretty serious. Also if you are overcrowded, that's pretty serious because if you have people on the inside that can't get out that can be a problem, particularly if you have some type of emergency or a fire."

Columbia Police Department Acting Chief Melron Kelly and Jenkins also did checks in The Vista, North Main and on Colonial Drive.

"We were doing spot checks and sometimes things draw your attention," Jenkins said. "Patrons should be able to come to your establishment and not only be comfortable but also be safe as well.  We just want to make sure that anybody goes out to these establishments are safe. That's our whole purpose."

T&T Lounge on Colonial Drive was shut down pending further inspections after inspectors saw an exit light that was out and combustible materials that were stored in an electrical room.

Place II on Main Street was cited for overcrowding and Jet on Gervais Street was issued another citation for an obstructed exit.

The fire marshal will perform follow up inspections, Jenkins said.
