Local organization speaks out against youth gun violence

Posted: Updated:

For years, one local organization has spoken out about gun violence in Nashville. This week their message was the importance of keeping guns out of the hands of children.

Sunday was the last day of the first annual Youth Gun-Violence Week, sponsored by Partners in the Struggle, Inc. There was a church service for the youth and their families, to emphasize that a change needs to happen.

The event had a local tie as well, dedicated in memory of Kevin Barbee, the 15-year-old students from McGavock High School who was shot and killed back in January.

"Talk to your children, even if it's talking to your spouse," said Kedrin Barbee, Kevin's father. "Have everyone understand the severity of mishandling a firearm. The only way it's going to stop is if we stop it."

Kedrin Barbee was presented a plaque from Partners in the Struggle in honor of his son.
