West Jackson considers resident improvements

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Could west Jackson's vacant lots and rough roads see a facelift as early as June?

A new master plan in the works aims to make that happen.

Voice of calvary ministries held a public meeting Saturday to get feedback from residents and business owners about how best to address west Jackson's problems.

They also showed these plans...which highlight some of the biggest issues facing that neighborhood.

"Three things, major things, came up and kept reoccurring through the process. That was the vacant and abandoned lots, education, which is a huge issue, and the homelessness issue, and mental instability of the people in the community who might be walking the streets or things of that nature."

Planner Jocelyn Poe says these factors affect quality of life and economic prosperity for the neighborhood.

They found eighty-eight percent of west Jackson residents live below the poverty line.
