Jackson Mayoral Profile: Chokwe Antar Lumumba

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Turning now to our profiles on Jackson mayoral candidates. We talk with the son of the late mayor, Chokwe Antar Lumumba.

Democratic candidate, Antar Lumumba hopes to fill the void left by the sudden death of his father. The young Antar is an attorney who told us his vision and aspirations are much the same for the city of Jackson. Particularly when it comes to the crumbling infrastructure

"We want to use, we are not only motivated to repair the infrastructure, we are motivated to use the workers for those repairs to uplift our economy," said Lumumba.

The candidate said a major hurdle has been reached with passage of a 1 cent sales tax during this father's administration.

He points to crime solving and also speaks of hope.

"People talk about increased police visibility. You hear a lot of people talk about the number of officers and those things do go to help," said Lumumba. "But the best thing you can do for crime is increase the opportunity for people. Doesn't matter if you are in Jackson, Mississippi, or Compton, California, wherever you have high poverty, you have high crime and so we have to go back to economic development. We have to take every opportunity to improve our local economy."

Lumumba says he is not a politician, but is best suited to carry the movement of the people forward.

"I don't have a long political agenda," added Lumumba. "I don't think that the leadership should come from political ambitions as it should necessitate. I think it's necessary that we continue the progress that we set out for."

The field is crowded with 13 candidates hoping to get the nod in the upcoming special election April 8th.
