Nashville welcome home parade for veterans needs your help

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Yellow ribbons and donations are one way to support our troops, but when the fighting is over there can be a whole new battle. Now there's another way to give veterans some fanfare and needed opportunities.

Nashville is following in the footsteps of other cities like St. Louis and Houston to give our Iraq and Afghanistan veterans a true heroes' homecoming: a parade and job fair on Flag Day.

"This is people from your town. This is the parents of kids you go to school with. And you're getting a chance to welcome them home. And I think showing the younger generation that is what is most important," said Iraq War veteran Brandi Majerus.

The parade is slated for the morning of Saturday, June 14, beginning at Bicentennial Mall and ending on War Memorial Plaza with a job fair.

Public donations will help fund the event along with veterans organization Operation Stand Down.

"So all of the leftover funding is going to go straight to them and the amazing work they do. They drive people to and from interviews. They don't just set them up. They give them haircut, suits. They give them interview training. It's really a fantastic organization," said event organizer Daniel Horwitz.

They also need companies to fill the plaza with opportunities, since the biggest part of this transition is finding a job for qualified veterans.

"We want to support people when they come back home. We made that mistake once, and we don't want to make it again. They deserve our thanks and they deserve a job," Horwitz said.
