MBI investigating Hinds Detention Center gang fight

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent probe into the gang fight that left one person dead and 7 hospitalized.

Sheriff Tyrone Lewis says inmates were able to let themselves out of their cells at the Raymond jail,  and tear apart the building to make shanks to stab and maim each other, just like they did in pod C in 2012.

"We know there were homemade weapons," said Sheriff Lewis. "They have the sensibility to utilize the materials inside the housing units to make makeshift weapons out of the materials in the ceiling."

Sheriff Lewis says it was overcrowding and a sub standard building that resulted in the deadly confrontation.

"This incident in my opinion because of the flaws of pods A and B, which is a direct replica of what pod C used to be because of the number of inmates," said Sheriff Lewis.

 Supervisor Darrel McQuirter said,

"One of the first actions we took was to allocate One Million Dollars towards repairs as far as pod A and B, at the time but again the work on pod C had to be completed before we could do anything," added Hinds County Supervisor Darrel McQuirter.

Supervisors approved an emergency order which will allow for pod C to be opened immediately so construction in pods A and B can begin.

They're also requesting cameras and radios for their deputies, as they now also have to find out who was responsible for killing inmate, 21-year-old Marquieze Bennett.

"Were keeping monitors on them," said Sheriff Lewis. "We're identifying who they are for intelligence purposes. Were able to monitor them according to their activity, that they are committing or able to commit in our facility."
