Memorial wall honors Tupelo police officer

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A memorial wall in Mississippi that honors police officers killed in the line of duty, now honors a Tupelo police officer killed after a bank robbery.

Police Sergeant Gale Stauffer's name has been placed on the Mississippi Officer's Memorial in Jackson. Sergeant Stauffer was shot and killed last December by a man who robbed a Tupelo bank.

His name is among 6 others recently added to the wall. Several others are from north Mississippi.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson, who helped fight to get the wall, says it's good for families of these officers to know that while they are gone, they are not forgotten.

Any Mississippi officer's name that is on the National Law Enforcement Wall in Washington D.C. is also on the Mississippi Memorial Wall.

A special day of memory will be held in Jackson sometime in May.
