JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

On the eve of the special election, we talked with former Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson about his decision to run for another term in office. The former mayor talked about his accomplishments during his three terms.

"In terms of overseeing the renaissance of downtown that's exactly right," said Jackson. But we have also seen a renaissance throughout the city of Jackson. We have replaced bridges, we have worked on drainage projects, we have supported affordable housing projects. We've hired more police officers in Jackson than any other mayor."

But Johnson acknowledges there is more that can be accomplished with new money pumped in by the 1 cent sales tax.

"We have done a lot and  think in doing a lot, you get a lot of experience," said Johnson. "And that's what's needed at this point in time. "

On the issue of crime and a link to poverty in the capitol city, Johnson says these are complex social concerns with no easy solutions.

"Yes we have challenges here and poverty is one of our challenges," said Johnson. "That is why I started the Jobs for Jacksonians Program, a program where we would actually help people to get jobs and  make sure that we can put money in the pockets of people who are not working."

In the past, some critics have labeled Johnson as an unresponsive leader. We asked what he might do differently.

"One thing I would do differently is try to communicate differently," said Johnson. "Because with people saying he hasn't done anything means we have not communicated our successes, our accomplishments well enough for them to believe. I  had visions back many years ago that this city could be the best of the new south.and that vision is still there."

Polls open at seven Tuesday morning and close at seven Tuesday evening.
