Health Department issues Flood Precautions

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

In light of a flood warning issued in the city of Jackson, officials at the Mississippi State Department of Health are advising residents to be prepared for any turn of events.

First, health officials recommend gathering emergency supplies and securing connection to local TV and radio reports. Sanitize sinks and tubs so they can be filled with clean water. Also fill empty plastic bottles.

Do not allow children to play in flood waters. There is a risk for exposure to raw sewage. Special care should be taken for any open cuts or wounds. Tetanus vaccinations are recommended for anyone who has not received one in the past ten years, especially in the event of an injury that breaks the skin.

If an evacuation is ordered, health officials say take only the necessary items, including medications. Homeowners are also advised to turn off all electricity, gas and water.  Experts say that can prevent electrical shock when power is restored.
