Thomasville's Harris English is aiming to be the first golfer to win the green jacket in their first Masters appearance since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979.
English is making his first Masters appearance after winning the St. Jude Classic last June
"Ever since I was 8,9, 10 years old when I was getting into golf, this is the golf course I wanted to play," English said. "This is the golf tournament I wanted to play and to have a chance to put on the green jacket it's huge."
English has played the course at Augusta National before. During his days at the University of Georgia, he played two tournaments on the course. But, this is the Masters a tournament that, like many golfers, holds a special place in the south Georgia native's heart.
"This was the tournament where every weekend I'd go watch it a couple hours," English said. "Then go hit a couple balls, then come back and watch the final. It's a dream come true really."
English has many family and friends in town for the tournament. One of those, is his former high school coach, Thad Lepcio, who isn't surprised his former player has made it to golf's biggest stage.
"He came to us when he was a freshman and he had a focus and a drive early that has translated now to being a pretty special player," Lepcio said.
English will tee off with the final group Thursday. He's paired with UGA teammate Russell Henley and veteran Lee Westwood.
