Heavy turnout for Jackson Mayoral Election

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The polls have closed in the special election for Jackson Mayor, and despite an off and on drizzle, the voter turnout appears to be better than in last year's city election.

Thirteen candidates are vying for the job left vacant by the sudden death of Chokwe Lumumba in February. A former Mayor and three members of city council are in the race, as well as a few candidates from last year's election.

The official list of candidates:

  • Margaret Barrett-Simon
  • Gwendolyn Ward Osborn Chapman
  • John Horhn
  • Harvey Johnson
  • Chokwe Antar Lumumba
  • Melvin V. Priester, Jr.
  • Regina Quinn
  • John E. Reed
  • Francis P. Smith, Jr.
  • Kenneth A. Swarts
  • Rodrick "Rod" Walker
  • Albert Wilson
  • Tony T. Yarber
The polls close at 7 p.m. and we'll have the results on air, online, and on mobile.

If no candidate gets a majority, a runoff will be held April 22. WLBT will televise a debate with the two runoff candidates April 17 at 8 p.m.
