MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Montgomery Police Department says two brothers are under arrest and charged with capital murder and second degree assault following a shooting that injured one and left another dead over the weekend.

29-year-old Michael Sankey and 27-year-old Christopher Sankey, both of Montgomery, were taken into custody late Tuesday evening following an investigation by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.

On Friday, April 11 around 6 p.m., police and fire medics responded to a report of a person shot in the 1700 block of South Holt Street. On the scene, first responders found one person, unnamed, with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

A second gunshot victim, 25-year-old Montgomery resident Derrick Varner, was later brought to Jackson Hospital where authorities pronounced him dead.

Police could not initially say what the circumstances were that surrounded Varner's death or if the two shootings were connected. Monday, investigators confirmed the shootings were related and were the result of an argument between the two victims and the suspects.

Court documents indicate the Sankey brothers shot the victim to death with a handgun while in the commission of a robbery in the area of Stephen Street and Oakland Street. MPD officials say it appears the suspects stole a vehicle from the victims.

Michael Sankey has a criminal recording including assault, burglary, robbery and marijuana possession. No criminal record was found for Christopher Sankey.

Both were taken to the Montgomery County Detention Facility where they are being held without bond.

Varner is Montgomery's fourth homicide victim of 2014.
