Outstanding volunteers honored at GIVE Awards

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Monday 15 exemplary volunteers from across the state were honored for their work. Volunteer Mississippi launched National Volunteer Week by handing out GIVE Awards at the 20th annual Governor's Initiative for Volunteer Excellence luncheon.    

First Lady and Volunteer Mississippi Honorary Chair, Deborah Bryant was among the speakers.    

Catherine Buffington picked up the award for Outstanding Volunteer Leadership by a Youth.

"Oh, it's such a great honor," said Buffington. "I'm so excited to represent the youth of Mississippi and I hope to inspire people to get out and volunteer because it's really important to get involved as a youth so you'll be involved as you get older."

"It's the best time of the year, because it reminds us that each of us can make a difference," said GIVE Awards coordinator Deirdre Harris Glover.

Others receiving awards were:

  • Pinks Dudley: The Marsha Meeks Kelly Award for Lifetime Achievement in Volunteer Service
  • Lawrence R. Abramson: Outstanding Service in Public Safety Al Collins
  • Outstanding Service by a National Service Participant
  • Charles Dwyer: Outstanding Achievement in Disabilities Service
  • Lynda Farve: Outstanding Humanitarian Service
  • Jeff Good: Outstanding Community Support by a Business Owner
  • Judie Granderson Holmes: Outstanding Service to Veterans & Military Families
  • JoAn Niceley: Outstanding Service in the Promotion of Healing
  • John W. Pace: Outstanding Achievement in Community Building Initiatives
  • Lindsey M. Pellittieri: Outstanding Service by a College Student
  • Cynthia Minton Walker: Outstanding Achievement in Education Initiatives
  • Springhill Historic Memorial Gardens: Outstanding Community Collaboration Initiative
  • St. Vincent de Paul Society - Our Lady of Fatima Conference: Outstanding Nonprofit Volunteer Outreach
  • Shaw Pit Bull Rescue: Outstanding Achievement by a Grassroots Volunteer Initiative

The event was held at the Mississippi Museum of Art in downtown Jackson.

The GIVE Awards are sponsored by Chevron Pascagoula Refinery, BankPlus, Trustmark National Bank, Maddox Foundation, BlueCrossBlueShield of Mississippi, Entergy, Sanderson Farms, and Ergon.
