YAZOO COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating a car crash that took the life of a Yazoo City teen.A burned out shell is all that is left of the car involved.

The wreck happened around 8:30 Thursday morning on Highway 49, just north of Yazoo City.

Family members tell us 17-year-old Jasmand Johnson died in the accident. She was a senior at Yazoo City High School.

Trooper Eric Henry said "They passed a vehicle, then completed that pass.  Once that vehicle completed the pass they lost control of the vehicle, and went off the roadway and overturned."

The car then flipped several times, ejecting Johnson. We are told she was not wearing a seatbelt and that she died on impact.

Her passenger, 19-year-old Latoya Goins, was pulled from the car by witnesses as it began to catch fire. Goins was then airlifted to UMC in stable condition.

We're told it was "Senior Skip Day" at Yazoo City High School and carloads of kids were headed to Greenwood to go skating.

Highway patrol officials say this accident should serve as a reminder to drivers, especially young ones that they need to keep their attention on the road.

"We want them to refrain from texting and driving, being distracted, and driving. Also contact me I'm the Public Affairs officer for these schools. I can come and do power point presentations on driver safety to the students. We just want all of them to be safe especially during prom season and school about to end," said Trooper Henry.
