Citizens react to Yarber video selfie

HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

With the Jackson mayoral runoff election just days away, we have resident reaction about an attack ad that debuted Friday on Jackson television stations.

The ad features a self-made video of City Councilman Tony Yarber imitating women who go to clubs.

Yarber said in a statement regarding the video: quote "It seems that the methods in which we do ministry has garnered the attention of some and is being ridiculed."

He said he stands behind the video as an example of helping young women.

Mayoral opponent Chokwe Antar Lumumba told 3 On Your Side his campaign had nothing to do with it, but one voter said she's skeptical.

"That would bother me intensely because I think it's negative campaigning, and when you assassinate someone else's character by taking something that's out of context, I think that that's evil," said Virginia Earnest of Jackson.

"I'm sure the other side has some campaign ads and tactics that I wouldn't agree with. I think it's been played on both sides, and I...it wouldn't swing my vote one way or the other," added Jackson resident Marlene Jones.

The group Citizens for Decency paid for the ad.
