JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

There was a celebration of survival Monday evening at the Hinds County Sheriff's Department. Teal and white balloons were released by sexual assault survivors and supporters in downtown Jackson.

It was a part of the department's first Denim Day awareness program. Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis said Denim Day sends a social statement while making a fashion statement of solidarity and protection against sexual assault.

Several agencies set up booths offering resources to rape victims.

A survivor shared her message of healing and urged victims to move forward through forgiveness and helping others.

"On July 1, 2008 I was raped at gunpoint and as sad as that sounds as horrible as that is, what you are looking at is recovery at its best, said guest speaker and rape survivor Javonda White, who wore a picture of her incarcerated attacker on her shirt. "I was raped in a closet, and I decided not to stay there. I was able to walk away with my life in tact and my body in tact."

Hinds County Supervisor Peggy Hobson Calhoun also presented advocacy agencies with a resolution from the board for their work with rape victims.
