Pollen stirs up plenty of misery

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

11 year old J. W. Clayton can tell you to the very day, how long he's had asthma, eczema and allergies. "Since I was born," he said.

Yep. As far as J. W. is concerned, he's had allergies forever. But it has not been forever under control, says his mom Jackie. "He's old enough to know that he needs his medicine. He needs his treatment. He's needs his cream."

J. W. is actually in the worst possible place for allergies. "Jackson, Mississippi will be in the top five every single year when it comes to allergy," said Dr. Todd Adkins, an allergist with Mississippi Asthma and Allergy Clinic.

Dr. Adkins says you will have a good idea if you will fall prey to the Mississippi environment early on. "Classic allergy symptoms are sneezing, itching, nasal congestion, runny nose, post nasal drip," Dr. Adkins said.

Allergies can be confirmed and specified with allergy tests. "It helps us when we get ready to treat because when we know what we're treating, we can make the treatment very specific for those things."

Treatment is very effective for most patients. "Topical nasal steroid sprays and long acting antihistamines are the mainstay of treatment in allergy."

While there is no actual cure for allergies, Dr. Adkins says there is a therapy that is close. "Allergy shots are vaccinations for the things you're allergic to, and it works by turning off that allergy so that even though you are exposed, you don't have the symptoms."

Beginning the treatment course before the all out allergy assault is the goal. This year, it has worked for J. W. according to mom, Jackie. "Actually it's not been as bad because he's been on top of it, taking his medicine when he needs it."
